## Azure Synapse Analytics — commitment brief

### Coverage summary

Azure Synapse Analytics offers two distinct commitment instruments. For Dedicated SQL Pool compute, a traditional cDWU reservation (1-yr or 3-yr) delivers up to \~65% off pay-as-you-go. For broader Synapse workloads — including Serverless SQL, Spark pools, pipelines, and data flows — the Synapse Pre-Purchase Plan (SCU) provides a prepaid credit pool at \~18% discount with a 1-year term. The two instruments serve different workload profiles and can be combined. Neither the Azure Compute Savings Plan nor Azure Hybrid Benefit applies to Synapse-specific SKUs.

**What is covered (cDWU reservation)**: Dedicated SQL Pool compute costs, purchased in 100 cDWU increments, scoped to a region.

**What is covered (SCU Pre-Purchase)**: Dedicated SQL Pool, Serverless SQL Pool, Serverless Apache Spark Pool (Memory Optimized), Managed VNET, Pipelines, Data Flow Basic, and Data Flow Standard workloads — all deducted at retail rates from the prepaid SCU pool.

**What is not covered**: Storage (always pay-as-you-go), networking, Self-Hosted Integration Runtime VM compute, Serverless SQL Pool and Spark pools via cDWU reservation (use SCU for those). Reservations do not auto-renew.

### Azure Hybrid Benefit

> Not applicable. Synapse Analytics is a PaaS service with no bring-your-own-license model for SQL Server or Windows Server.

### Reservation vs. SCU Pre-Purchase Plan

**cDWU Reservation**: Scoped to Dedicated SQL Pool compute only, in a specific region. Highest discount (up to \~65% at 3-yr). Best for stable Dedicated SQL Pool workloads with predictable cDWU usage.

**SCU Pre-Purchase Plan** *(1-yr only)*: Prepaid credit pool covering all major Synapse workloads. Roughly \~18% discount off retail. Best for organizations using Serverless SQL, Spark, pipelines, and data flows alongside or instead of Dedicated SQL Pool.

## Regional availability

Azure Synapse Analytics cDWU reservations are available in all commercial Azure regions where Dedicated SQL Pool (formerly SQL DW) is deployed. Reservations are region-scoped — each reservation covers cDWU usage in the selected region only. The Synapse Pre-Purchase Plan (SCU) is similarly region-scoped at purchase time.

**Notable exclusions**: Azure Government and Azure China regions are not supported for Synapse Analytics reservations. The Synapse Workspace feature (enabling unified Dedicated SQL Pool management through the Synapse workspace experience) is not available in all commercial regions; verify workspace-connected region availability if using the newer workspace-integrated deployment model.
