Azure Databricks — commitment brief

Data sourced: March 2026. Verify current figures at the Azure Pricing Calculatorarrow-up-right.

Coverage summary

Azure Databricks offers a Databricks Unit (DBU) Pre-Purchase Plan (DBCU — Databricks Commit Units) that prepays for DBU consumption across all Databricks workloads and tiers, with discounts up to ~37% vs. pay-as-you-go DBU rates. DBCUs automatically deduct from all workspaces in scope — no assignment required. Cancellations and exchanges are not supported; all purchases are final. Separately, the underlying VM compute for Databricks clusters can also be committed via Azure Reserved VM Instances or the Azure Compute Savings Plan, which are independent of the DBU layer.

What is covered: Databricks Unit (DBU) consumption across all workloads — all-purpose compute, jobs compute, SQL compute, Delta Live Tables. DBCUs are flexible across Databricks tiers (Standard/Premium) and can be used across workspaces in scope.

What is not covered: VM compute charges for cluster nodes (reserved separately via Azure VM RIs or Compute Savings Plan), storage costs, networking costs. Photon-enabled workloads consume DBUs at higher rates, reducing the effective reach of a fixed DBCU commitment.

Azure Hybrid Benefit

Not applicable to the DBU layer. Azure Hybrid Benefit may apply separately to the underlying VM compute (Windows Server or SQL Server licenses on cluster VMs), but does not interact with DBU pricing.

Reservation vs. savings plan

DBCU Pre-Purchase Plan: Prepaid pool covering DBU consumption across all Databricks workloads and workspaces in scope. 1-year and 3-year terms available. Up to ~37% discount vs. PAYG DBU rates. Cannot be cancelled or exchanged. Best for organizations with stable, predictable Databricks usage.

VM-level commitments (independent layer): The Azure Compute Savings Plan and Reserved VM Instances apply to the underlying cluster VM compute — a separate cost layer from DBUs. Both can be held simultaneously: DBCU covers the Databricks software/usage layer; VM commitment covers the infrastructure layer.

Regional availability

The Databricks DBCU Pre-Purchase Plan is not region-scoped — it applies globally to all Azure Databricks workspaces and workloads across all Azure regions where Databricks is available. When you purchase DBCUs, you do not select a specific region; the prepaid credit deducts from usage across all qualifying workspaces automatically.

Notable exclusions: Azure Government and Azure China sovereign cloud regions are not supported for the DBCU Pre-Purchase Plan.

⚠️ Availability varies by SKU and region. Always verify in the Azure portalarrow-up-right or via the Azure Retail Pricing APIarrow-up-right before purchasing.

Archera

Azure Databricks is within Archera's commitment management scope. Archera can model DBCU pre-purchase sizing alongside VM-level reservation strategy, and wrap commitments in a GRI/GSP — eliminating downside risk on over-committed DBU prepayments.
