AWS Neptune — commitment brief

Data sourced: March 2026. Verify current figures at the AWS Pricing Calculatorarrow-up-right.

Coverage summary

Amazon Neptune supports commitment discounts through Database Savings Plans (1-yr, no upfront) as the primary instrument, offering up to 35% savings across a portfolio of managed database services including Neptune. Traditional per-instance Reserved Instances are not prominently featured for Neptune — AWS has directed Neptune cost optimization toward Database Savings Plans, which cover Neptune Instances and Neptune Serverless. Neptune Analytics was added to Database Savings Plans coverage in March 2026. For I/O-intensive workloads, Neptune I/O-Optimized pricing can reduce costs by up to 40% when I/O charges exceed 25% of total Neptune spend.

What is covered: Neptune provisioned DB instance compute charges (vCPU/RAM) and Neptune Serverless NCU-hours under Database Savings Plans. Neptune Analytics compute is also covered by Database Savings Plans (added March 2026).

What is not covered: Neptune storage (distributed storage billed per GB-month), I/O charges (unless on I/O-Optimized pricing), data transfer, Global Database cross-region replication charges, and Neptune Streams.

Commitment instrument

Amazon Neptune cost optimization centers on Database Savings Plans (1-yr, no upfront, up to 35% savings across eligible managed database services). The Savings Plan commitment is an hourly spend rate ($/hour) that automatically applies to Neptune and other covered database usage. This is more flexible than per-instance RIs — the same commitment can shift between Neptune instances, Aurora, RDS, DynamoDB, and other eligible services as usage changes. There are no Neptune-specific Reserved Instances or 3-year Savings Plan terms currently offered.

Regional availability

Commitment scope: Region-flexible — Database Savings Plans apply automatically across all covered database services in any supported AWS region; no regional lock-in for the commitment.

Available in all commercial AWS regions where Amazon Neptune is offered. Database Savings Plans for Neptune Analytics were confirmed available in all supported regions as of March 2026.

Partition notes: Database Savings Plans are not available in China (cn-) regions. They can cover GovCloud (us-gov-) Neptune usage, but Savings Plans must be purchased from a linked standard AWS account — they cannot be purchased directly from GovCloud accounts. Verify Neptune instance type availability in GovCloud before purchasing, as newer instance types may have delayed regional rollout.

⚠️ Regional and partition availability varies by instance type. Always verify at the AWS Pricing Consolearrow-up-right before purchasing.

Archera

Amazon Neptune is within Archera's commitment management scope. Archera can automate Database Savings Plan commitments that cover Neptune instance and serverless usage, monitor utilization across Neptune workloads, and wrap commitments in a GRI/GSP — eliminating downside risk on over-commitment while preserving the Savings Plan discount. Database Savings Plans allow the commitment to flex across Neptune and other eligible managed database services if usage patterns shift.
